YURENAKI

An analog glitch box, emulated inside your PC.

Yurenaki is an OpenFX plugin for DaVinci Resolve on Windows, and it works in the free version of Resolve.

The trial is the full plugin with a watermark, no time limit.

Everything in this reel is the plugin's own output.

A circuit with memory

Most analog-look effects are one-way filters: they paint stripes and noise onto each frame. Yurenaki is a circuit with memory. Your footage is turned into a simulated composite video signal and sent through models of a glitch box's circuits, in this order:

  1. An enhancer whose feedback never quite switches off.
  2. A sync mixer that drags the picture from locked to rolling, white-out, snow and black.
  3. A television trying to lock onto what it receives.
  4. A camera filming the screen and feeding it back in.

The stripes, colour smears and sync tears are not drawn on. They happen inside the emulated circuit, keep moving on a still picture, and grow from frame to frame.

What you can do

  • Turn up Enhancer Gain and Feedback Gain until edges ring and the oscillation blooms into stripes and colour.
  • Turn up Sync to roll the picture, lift it to white, bury it in grain and snow, or sink it to black.
  • Mix the camera back in for video-feedback tunnels: straight on, panned, tilted, or zoomed and rolled.
  • Keyframe every control except the camera position.

Good to know

Standard definition inside, by design. The box works on a 768 × 480 TV picture and scales back to your timeline. The softness is part of the look, and a 4K timeline costs the same as HD.

CPU only. On a 16-core desktop CPU a 1080p frame takes about 30–40 ms. On slower computers playback is choppy; the render cache gives smooth previews, and the export is the same on any machine. It's made for rendered video, not live performance.

Exports are exact. Render the same range twice and you get the same file, bit for bit. Because the circuit has memory, scrubbing shows a close approximation; playing or exporting shows the real thing.

Works at any frame rate. Inside, the TV runs at 29.97 frames a second, like the real thing fed with video.

FAQ

Does it work in the free version of DaVinci Resolve?

Yes. It has been tested in DaVinci Resolve 21, both the free edition and Studio.

Will it play back in real time?

It depends on your CPU. On slower computers playback is choppy, but Resolve stays responsive. Use the render cache for smooth previews. The export is always exact.

Why does the picture change when I scrub?

Each frame depends on the frames before it, like the real circuit. When you jump, the plugin warms up from a few frames earlier and shows a close guess. Play from a little earlier, or export, to see the exact picture.

Does it need the internet?

Once, to activate your key, and now and then after that to check it. Rendering never waits for the check.

Can I use the results in commercial work?

Yes, with no credit needed.
